International Wine Report on Sojourn Spring 2023 Wines

International Wine Report on Sojourn Spring 2023 Wines

97 Points - 2021 Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir

Like a majority of the Sojourn 2021 Pinot Noirs, the Gap’s Crown is also aged in 50% new French oak but sees approximately 15% whole cluster during fermentation. This Pinot Noir is always one of my favorites coming out of the Sonoma Coast, and the Sojourn 2021 is another beautiful example. A shimmering ruby-garnet core with a blueish rim in the glass, it assembles bountiful notes of dark cherry compote, fresh black raspberry, spiced blue plum skin, brown mushroom, salty sea breeze, liquid chocolate, and hints of dried lemongrass. Complex, engaging, and downright delicious, this should be a wine that everyone should seek out to try. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

96 Points - 2021 Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot Noir

The 2021 Sangiacomo Pinot Noir from Sojourn is one of my favorites from the tasting. It’s aged in 50% new French oak, which helps it deliver a more rich and spicy experience on the palate. Explosive red and black cherry fruit, dried mint, pine needle, mountain sage, dried red rose petal, and a hint of Blood orange pounce out of the glass. Silky tannins and acidity lend raciness to the wine, yet there is plenty of minerality and brightness to be found on the finish. Drink now with a heavy decant or over the next decade.

96 Points - 2021 UV Lucky Well Vineyard Pinot Noir

The 2021 UV Lucky Well from Sojourn is a new-to-me Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast and is wonderfully delicious and very drinkable. Presenting a medium to dark glimmering ruby core with a neon pink rim in the glass, it sports notes of crushed blueberry, dried thyme, luscious cinnamon, hints of purple wildflowers, umami, and scintillating aspects of crushed peppercorn and cedary herbs. Wonderfully balanced with no rough edges to be found, it finishes with a perfect balance of fruit, herbs, and earth. I can’t wait to see what future vintages of this wine look like in the Sojourn portfolio.

96 Points - 2021 Gap’s Crown Vineyard Chardonnay

With fruit coming from the famed Gap’s Crown Vineyard, this scintillating Chardonnay from Sojourn is always one of my favorites year after year. A medium golden lemon core with a watery rim displays beautifully in the glass. I wasn’t given any tech sheets on this wine, but my assumption is that it sees about 30% new French oak because of the richness and delicious baking spice notes I get on the back palate. Notes of ripe yellow apple, white peach, honey-coated pear, dried sage, and crushed rock minerality explode in the mouth. Exceptionally balanced, it finishes long with fantastic purity of fruit.

96 Points - 2020 Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon

The scintillating 2020 Beckstoffer George III Sojourn Cabernet is aged in 75% new French oak is always my favorite wine from the estate. Classic Napa Cabernet notes of dried and fresh blackberry, boysenberry fruit leather, creme de cassis, earthy spice, eucalyptus, sweet tobacco, cedary herbs, graphite powder, and violet flower petals pour from the glass. Fully ripe and concentrated with grippy sweet tannins, mouthwatering acidity, and a lengthy fruit-forward finish complete the wine. Highly recommended and
editor’s choice.

95 Points - 2021 Walala Vineyard Pinot Noir

The 2021 Walala Pinot Noir from Sojourn boasts a medium ruby core with a blueish rim and was aged in 50% new French oak barrels. It does see 5% whole cluster during fermentation which helps add some earthiness and structure to the wine. Lovely red rose, black raspberry, and cherry cola notes explode from the glass, with secondary components of sandalwood, cedary herbs, and shaved chocolate playing second fiddle. The rich mouthfeel and sweet chewy tannins create the backbone of this wine.

95 Points - 2021 Rodgers Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir

Rich forest fruits and wet earth tones start the superb 2021 Rodgers Creek Pinot Noir from Sojourn. It’s a complex and flavorful bottle of wine that offers notes of boysenberry, crushed black cherry, pomegranate seeds, pencil shavings, and a hint of cola. Moving to the palate, more flavors of juicy blue and black fruits merge with cedary herbs, ground clove, and umami tones. Tannins are a bit grippy but in check with the medium-high levels of acidity, while it finishes with blue fruit and savory earth notes on the mid-palate.

95 Points - 2021 Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay

Showcasing a golden lemon core with a silvery rim, the 2021 Sangiacomo Chardonnay from Sojourn sees 30% new French oak and approximately 65% malolactic fermentation. As with all of the Sojourn Chardonnays, it’s almost full-bodied, plush on the tongue, and delivers phenomenal purity of fruit on the front and mid-palate. Notes of baked lemon pie, Bartlett pear, lemony herbs, and crushed wet rock are everpresent, with balanced acidity and a dried thyme aspect hitting the lengthy finish.

95 Points - 2020 Home Ranch Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2020 Sojourn Home Ranch Cuvée is 100% berry-sorted Cabernet Sauvignon that is fermented with 100% native yeast and sees 70% new French oak for 20 months during aging. Boasting an inky dark ruby and purple rim with a shimmering neon pink rim in the glass, it starts with notes of crushed blackberries, dusty blueberries, dried violet and lavender flowers and ends with melted dark chocolate, cedary herbs, toasted candied cinnamon stick, and touches of Christmas spiced blue plum. Sweet crunch tannins, mouthwatering acidity, and an earthy finish complete the wine. For the price point of $65, it would be hard-pressed to find a better Cabernet for $65. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

94 Points - 2021 Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir

The 2021 Sojourn Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir is fermented with native yeasts that is aged in 50% new French oak barrels and sports a shimmering neon garnet core with a rose-colored rim. Blue fruit dominates the nose (blueberry, huckleberry, and plum), alongside additional aspects of shaved chocolate, powdered graphite, crushed pink peppercorn, and a touch of olive brine. A lovely pine-spice note hits the back palate on the finish. This is another lovely Pinot Noir from the team at Sojourn.

93 Points - 2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The 2021 Sojourn Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir sees 50% new French oak and is fermented entirely with native yeast. Presenting a blue-ruby core with a silvery rim, it starts with lovely aromas of crushed blueberry, red and blue plum, dried violet flower, and wet autumn leaves. A well-balanced palate gifts perfect levels of acidity, rounded sweet tannins, and a blue-fruit and earth-driven finish.

93 Points - 2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The 2021 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay by Sojourn sees 70% malolactic fermentation and rests in 30% new French oak. Lemon verbena, honeysuckle, dried pineapple, fresh linen, and toasted almond aromas pop from the glass. A medium to full body produces a rich and oily mouthfeel that is fruit-focused with elevated acidity and a dried herbaceous and lengthy finish.
